The lunar influences in the couture shows in Paris this week are forecasting a comeback of cool and effervescent silver tones.
For several seasons now, accessories (including all of mine) have been dominated by rich and dangling gold vintage-inspired chains pendants but recently, I’ve noticed an increasing amount of silver detailing from the buckles of skyhigh black leather ankle booties to the studs on eighties-influenced shoulders and belts. Couture collections from Armani Privé and Chanel this week may be the strong influence needed to push this trend into the public fashion consciousness.
The moon reigned at Armani Privé, the couture sub-label of Armani. Armani explained his inspiration: “I always need a hook to get into a collection, and that was it—thinking about something romantic and dreamy, far away from our everyday life. Something less harsh.” And he succeeded! The lunar influences are readily apparent in the crescent-shaped clasps. More beautiful though are Armani’s invokation of the moon’s orbed shape in rounded collars and shoulders, standing in striking contrast to the sharp pointed 80’s influenced shoulders that has dominated past seasons.
Pale and ethereal, Lagerfeld’s latest (and 54th!!!) collection for Chanel was the first of his with nary a hint of black, navy or a gold button. The silver influence is apparent in everything from the fantastic, simultaneously space-age and vintage mod shoes, to the shimmering tights. More subtle silver linings include the streaks of gray in the models’ hair which bafflingly manage to convey futurism rather than age. Defined by muted pastel tones, the tone was light-hearted and despite Kaiser Karl’s assertion that, “I don’t believe in avant-garde clothes for a future that will never happen…fashion is always now,” I can’t help but sense a hopeful, if not downright optimistic, look ahead.
